The term GAPS, abbreviated from Gut and Psychology Syndrome was created by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, MMedSci (Neurology), MMedSci (Human Nutrition) in 2004 after working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as autism spectrum disorders, ADD/ ADHD, schizophrenia, dyslexia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other neurological and psychiatric problems. The diet focuses on fermented foods and avoids starches, sugars and grains.
Thyroid disorders are increasing and many sufferers may be suffering from symptoms including loss of hair, low energy, low libido, weight gain or weight loss, dry skin, irregular menstrual cycle and infertility. A full thyroid panel is necessary to assess the thyroid condition, this should include TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3 as well as antibodies.
